The Gratitude Awards recognize everyday individuals bring the founding principles of our organization to life: Promotion of culture, importance of family and significance of service. We impact the lives of others in profound ways everyday, by way of the Gratitude Award we honour those for contributing to strengthening community.

Award Categories & Criteria:

1. Hero amongst Us Award

This award is a unique opportunity to recognize an elder (aged 60+) who has overcome barriers in starting a new life in Canada while contributing to other immigrants, seniors or the wider community.

2. Bright Star Award

Presented to a young person (aged 24 and under) who’s been a great peer mentor at school or in community. This individual has worked hard to support other youth in need, promote cultural awareness and/or volunteering.

3. Sesheme Legacy Award

This award appreciates a woman who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in her community. This woman works tirelessly to support families in need, promote cultural appreciation and/or creates and supports opportunities to volunteer.

Terms for Nomination:

1. Nominees must be nominated by another person

2. Nominees are subject to a reference check.

3. Nominees must agree to be publicly recognized and be available to attend the Gratitude Awards on May 6, 2012.

We are currently seeking dynamic, community-oriented, dedicated individuals for a 2-year term on our Board of Directors. The term will commence September 2010 and end August 2012.

Ideal candidates will possess fundraising expertise and/or the desire to support fundraising endeavours to ensure future growth and sustainability of the organization. They will have familiarity with non-profit organizations and have pervious experience serving on or working with a board. Expertise in government relations, public relations/communications, finance and advocacy is also considered as asset. Experience and/or knowledge of board governance with a financial background is desirable. All candidates must have strong business acumen, independence of judgement and personal integrity.

As a Board member you will be participate in monthly Board meetings and sit on one of the operational committees: Signature Events, Finance, Strategic Communications, and Fundraising.

Sesheme Foundation Family Members (volunteers) are all ages and from every walk of life – from students to grandparents, from new immigrants to individuals with special needs. You can give as little or as much time as you want, and our Volunteer program will match your skills and interests to a role that’s just right for you. Here’s a sample of what volunteers are involved with at The Sesheme Foundation:

• Assisting community events
• Coordinating fundraising events
• Making friendly visits to seniors
• Helping newcomers adjust to life in Canada
• Providing administrative assistance
• Acting as event photographers
• Writing contributions to our newsletter
• Acting as hosts to help new immigrants make a smooth transition into Canadian life

SLYE Coordinator Posting (August2012)

Sesheme Seniors Clubs are active groups of seniors who’ve come together to increase their physical and social activity as a way of contributing to community. Clubs must have at least 6 members and be open to more members. Members must at least once per month and engage in activities which promote cultural exploration and shared learning.

Each year new internship hosts are selected to provide the learning opportunity. We encourage community organizations and groups to apply as hosts by completing the application. 2010 Host was Music Africa. Through The Core, Music Africa was able to support 4 youth with an exciting opportunity working on the Afrofest Music Festival. The interns were able to meet artists, learn about different styles of music and instruments, learn the ins and outs of planning a 2-day festival and contribute to the organizational development of the organization. Thank you Music Africa and thanks to the 2010 interns (Jeremy, Marwan, Dan and Godwin) for all your hard work.
