+ Sesheme Seniors Club +

Sesheme Foundation values the role seniors play in community. Not only are they wise elders, they are also talented individuals capable of continuing to make incredible contributions to community through service. While 50+ adults offer great promise to community building efforts, the volunteer infrastructure to engage them effectively is limited. The number and type of service opportunities available to this demographic doesn’t reflect the diversity, skills and needs of this valuable group. This is especially true of newcomer seniors who have English as a second or third language.

Sesheme Seniors Clubs are active groups of seniors who’ve come together to increase their physical and social activity as a way of contributing to community. Clubs must have at least 6 members and be open to more members. Members must at least once per month and engage in activities which promote cultural exploration and shared learning.

+ The Core – Cultural Internship Program +

The Core – cultural internships program provides paid learning opportunities for youth in environments that promote the richness of ethno-cultural contributions to the local and global development of family as community. The program is generously funded by proceeds from the Annual Family Brunch. The purpose of the program is to create 2 and 4 month work experience placements for youth aged 19 to 25.

Each year new internship hosts are selected to provide the learning opportunity. We encourage community organizations and groups to apply as hosts by completing the application. 2010 Host was Music Africa. Through The Core, Music Africa was able to support 4 youth with an exciting opportunity working on the Afrofest Music Festival. The interns were able to meet artists, learn about different styles of music and instruments, learn the ins and outs of planning a 2-day festival and contribute to the organizational development of the organization. Thank you Music Africa and thanks to the 2010 interns (Jeremy, Marwan, Dan and Godwin) for all your hard work.

If you are interested in participating as a host or intern in the 2011 program please look out for the applications to open in January 2011.
